Lichen species co-occurrence patterns along an edge-interior Mediterranean forest gradient

چکیده
The co-occurrence pattern of epiphytic lichen communities was evaluated relative to microenvironmental heterogeneity along an edge-interior forest gradient. We collected data on the occurrence of 57 epiphytic lichen species from 452 plots in a Mediterranean forest remnant. We used two realistic null models to test for non-randomness in the structure of epiphytic lichen communities and generalized linear models to test the influence of micro-environmental variables on co-occurrence indices along the edge-interior gradient. We found that epiphytic lichen communities co-occurred less often than expected by chance, although the segregation pattern was not highly structured or recurrent. Less species co-occurrence was detected in the assemblage structure in the forest interior and with a southerly exposure. However, there were no significant relationships between co-occurrence and the number of coexisting species, the dominant species coverage or bryophyte coverage. In summary, our cooccurrence analyses suggested that epiphytic lichens were competitively structured, while we found no evidence of facilitation in more stressful conditions, as predicted by the stress-gradient hypothesis. Nevertheless, these results should be treated with caution because co-occurrence patterns may involve specific unknown modes of facilitation and competition, which relate to the life history of these

Understorey bird responses to the edge-interior gradient in an isolated tropical rainforest of Malaysia
Forest fragmentation results in a loss of forest interior and an increase in edge habitat. We studied how understorey bird community composition and habitat variables changed along an edge-to-interior gradient in a 1248-ha lowland rainforest patch in peninsular Malaysia. Birds and environmental variables such as vegetation structure and litter depth were detected within a 25-m radius of each of...

Question: What are the responses of epiphytic lichens to the intensity of management along a large environmental gradient in Mediterranean Quercus forests? Location: Central Spain. Methods: This study was carried out on 4590 trees located in 306 forest stands dominated by Quercus faginea or Quercus ilex ssp. ballota. The effect of forest management and other predictor variables on several speci...
متن کاملPositive Edge Effects on Forest-Interior Cryptogams in Clear-Cuts
Biological edge effects are often assessed in high quality focal habitats that are negatively influenced by human-modified low quality matrix habitats. A deeper understanding of the possibilities for positive edge effects in matrix habitats bordering focal habitats (e.g. spillover effects) is, however, essential for enhancing landscape-level resilience to human alterations. We surveyed epixylic...
متن کاملMorphological, photosynthetic and water relations traits underpin the contrasting success of two tropical lichen groups at the interior and edge of forest fragments
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Forest edges created by fragmentation strongly affect the abiotic and biotic environment. A rarely studied consequence is the resulting impact on non-vascular plants such as poikilohydric lichens, known to be highly sensitive to changes in the microenvironment. We evaluated the impact of forest edge and forest interior on the distribution of two groups of crustose lichens ch...
متن کاملDo leaf-litter attributes affect the richness of leaf-litter ants?
The search for factors shaping leaf-litter ant communities has received particular attention due to the essential role of these insects in many ecological processes. Here, we aimed to investigate how the number of leaves and leaf morphotypes affect the litter-ant species density at forest edge and interior in an Atlantic Forest remnant in the state of Alagoas, Brazil. This study was developed b...
